Mitford Gets Track Record in Alex Picov Championship

Ajax Downs hosted the Alex Picov Memorial Championship on Tuesday's race card.


AJAX, ONT—SEPTEMBER 17, 2013—Mitford set a new track record with a game effort in the $89,603(US) Alex Picov Memorial Championship at Ajax Downs on Tuesday.

Under jockey Erika Smilovsky, Mitford caught post-time favorite One Famous Glass to win the Alex Picov Memorial Championship. The IVORY JAMES gelding completed the 440 yards in track record time of :21.520 seconds, a 109 speed index. established the previous record of :21.530 on August 10, 2010.

Scott Reid conditions Mitford owner John Wilson. The $35,842(US) winner's purse boosted the black gelding's earnings to $44,453. It was the third win in five starts this season for the Texas bred out of Fitting Celebration, by Ronas Ryon. Bobby D. Cox is the breeder.

Also a Texas-bred, One Famous Glass led the entire race before getting caught by a head at the wire. Bryn Robertson saddled the colt for Carol Robertson, Jaime Robertson and Dr. Charles Hall. The $17,921(US) runner-up purse moved One Famous Glass' earrings to $76,647. Marty Mercieca was aboard.

The Fdd Map gave up grudgingly to finish 1-¾ lengths back for owner/trainer Les Baker. John McInerney rode 4-year-old to earn $8,960 (US).

Completing the field were First Down The Track, Lookingforagoodtime, Had To be Fandango, Cat Vision, Paint It Black, Zoomin After Six and Leanintoit.
