El Best Tornado Surprises In $60,015 Rocky Mountain QH Derby at Arapahoe Park Sunday

El Best Tornado, under jockey Valente Vorrath, defeats Kali I (#8) in the $50,015 Rocky Mountain QH Derby Sunday at Arapahoe Park.

AURORA, CO—JULY 24, 2022—El Best Tornado defeated fastest qualifier and heavy post time favorite Kali K by a neck in the $60,015 Rocky Mountain QH Derby Sunday afternoon at Arapahoe Park.

Under jockey Valente Vorrath, El Best Tornado took a quick lead then edged away to stop the clock in :17.621 seconds, a 97 speed index for the 350 yards with an 18 mph tailwind. It was the second career win for the won of multiple stakes sire DOCS BEST CARD.

Bred in California by Jaime H. Gomez, El Best Tornado races for owner Juan Escobedo and is trained by Chris Gandarilla.  Third in the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes (not black type) last February, El Best Tornado made his first start off the West Coast with a second-place effort in the Rocky Mountain Derby trials July 10th.

Out of the Bodacious Dash mare Bo Dash Back, El Best Tornado picked up $24,006 to boost his career mar to $49,420.

Winner of last year's Mile High Futurity, runner-up Kali K suffered her first career loss after five consecutive wins.  Alexander Orozco tarins the One Fabulous Eagle filly for owner Luis Marquez.  Darling Farms bred Kali K in Colorado from the No Secrets Here mare A Secret Episode. Ridden by Jose Lopez, Kali K earned $12,003 to bring her career mark to $56,689.

California Breeders Freshman Stakes winner Vamoosing finished three-quarters back to earn $7,202 for third. Jose Arjon trains the Separate Interest gelding for owner Vences Racing. Bred by Edward C. Allred, from the Walk Thru Fire mare Escape The Fire, Vamoosing has earned $44,341 in 13 career starts.

Yesterday Road, Race For Corona, C Storm Green Blue Eye Fury, Dna Dashing Eagle and True completed the field. Dg VIctorynvalhalla was scratched.
