MEXICO CITY, MEX—APRIL 19, 2021—The Charo Championship, a race held in honor of the national sport of racing, was the second of four stakes on February 28th at Hipódromo de las Américas in Mexico City.
Seven three-year-old participants, all raised in the United States, were entered for the $322 000 pesos (approx $15 307US) purse to be contested over 350 yards on a fast track.
At the start, Open Happenstance overcame early contact with h BV Myheartwillgoon a few yards down the lane. The race followed a fast pace as favorite AQHA Racing Mexico Champion BP Mariah Cartel, the early leader, was surpassed by BV Myheartwillgoon and then overtaken by One Happenstance and Dash To Done To Gain, with those two crossing the wire first and second.
Israel Dominguez Morales was the rider responsible for leading One Happenstance to his first triumph in four outings. The gelding completed the 350 yards in :17.16 for a 94 speed index. He is owned Cuadra H–R and trained Herminio Domínguez Meza who is represented by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas. Rachuan Suarez MVZ paid $14,000 for One Happenstance at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Raised in the United States by Thomas Bradbury and the late Vaughn Cook, the winner is a son of last year's leading first-crop sire of winners ONE FABULOUS EAGLE and is out of Beaus Wagon by Pyc Paint Your Wagon.
For the win One Happenstance added $161,000 pesos (approx.. $7,763) to his earnings account which already had funds resulting from his second place in the Youth Championship on December 13.
